Core to our values is the principle that law is an instrument for social justice and should provide equity for everyone regardless of their social standing. We believe that access to justice – and quality legal service – should never be the exclusive preserve of a select and privileged few.

Through our pro bono programme we enable people to take a stand in protecting and enforcing their rights. We represent and offer our legal services for poor and indigent people and communities, the only criteria being that believe in your case.

We also encourage final-year law students to volunteer in the program as part of their exposure to practical legal practice. In doing what we love, we can impact the lives of the people in the community we serve.

Through the Hlokomela Bawsa Initiative (Caring for the Youth – Sepedi translation) we pioneer and fund an Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme that cares for vulnerable children from underprivileged backgrounds, particularly those in their foundation years. The programme provides nutrition, early learning support and access to quality developmental opportunities, enabling them to be healthy and ready for formal schooling, towards reaching their full potential in life.

The programme was initially launched, informally, by Joseph Maluleke who bought 100 pairs of school shoes for underprivileged children in Mpumalanga province.

We hope, through this initiative, to partner with the Department of Education, municipalities and the Department of Social Development in the provinces, to implement a number of exciting projects. We plan on expanding our investment in child nutrition and creating related enterprise development opportunities for unemployed black women.

The Maluks Foundation Trust has partnered with the Simaxebanxeba Initiative (We are wounded – Zulu translation), a non-profit organisation that is run by retired officers of the South African Police Service (SAPS) who all share a continued passion for solving crimes and bringing perpetrators to book. This organisation pursues cases whenever the capacity of the SAPS is constrained – helping investigate and supporting detectives in their mission to make South Africans feel safe and secure.

Letsema is an Employee Volunteering Programme that affords our employees a wide range of opportunities for volunteering – including the Hlokomela Baswa ECD project and other environmental projects. The name, “Letsema” stems from a Sotho proverb, “Letsema le tia ka beng,” which means that “people coming together to work for a common purpose are stronger”.

Other volunteering opportunities include payroll-giving; grants to community projects supported by individual staff members in their personal capacity (Ukusizana); in-house collection campaigns; food-packaging events; soup kitchens for the homeless; skills volunteering; and support of Take a Girl Child to Work and Tomorrow’s Man and national CSI days such as the CANSA Shavathon and Mandela Day.

Through our actions, we can bring about positive change and enable more people to create and secure a better future.
